I quickly came to see why it\u2019s referred to as the American Riviera.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The weather was superb and steady \u2013 \u00a0mid 20s C, sunny, with barely a breath of wind. The red tile roofs and the white stucco feel very Mediterranean. The place is very pedestrian friendly. I\u2019d previously taken a week-long studio class from Brenda and learned a great deal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I was excited about working en plein air under her instruction, and I wasn\u2019t disappointed! Brenda is knowledgeable, well organized, and very available to her students. Both buildings are steeped in history.<\/p>\n<p>The Santa Barbara Mission was originally built in 1786, and it was rebuilt and restored twice due to damage from earthquakes in 1812 and 1925.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Courthouse is a Spanish Colonial Revival style building completed in 1929. It features a mural room whose walls are covered with murals depicting Santa Barbara&#8217;s rich cultural history.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We were also introduced to a series of buildings designed by local architect, Jeff Shelton.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pauseworks.com\/patkatzartwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Santa-Barbara-El-Andaluz-w-smaller.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1936\" src=\"https:\/\/pauseworks.com\/patkatzartwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Santa-Barbara-El-Andaluz-w-smaller-300x227.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pauseworks.com\/patkatzartwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Santa-Barbara-El-Andaluz-w-smaller-300x227.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pauseworks.com\/patkatzartwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Santa-Barbara-El-Andaluz-w-smaller-1024x776.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pauseworks.com\/patkatzartwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Santa-Barbara-El-Andaluz-w-smaller-768x582.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pauseworks.com\/patkatzartwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Santa-Barbara-El-Andaluz-w-smaller-1536x1164.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/pauseworks.com\/patkatzartwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Santa-Barbara-El-Andaluz-w-smaller-200x152.jpg 200w, https:\/\/pauseworks.com\/patkatzartwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Santa-Barbara-El-Andaluz-w-smaller.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Shelton\u2019s buildings are quirky and fun \u2013 very reminiscent of the architecture of Barcelona\u2019s Antoni Gaudi. Freewheeling shapes and forms, creative tiles and ironwork, with multicolored clay urns built into the walls. That makes for very interesting sketching opportunities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a special treat, Jackie Grandchamps from <a href=\"https:\/\/frenchescapade.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">French Escapade<\/a> (the group that sponsored the workshop) arranged for us to meet Shelton in person. We visited his Fig Avenue design studio where we heard firsthand about his approach to design. You can learn more about his work in his recently published book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jeffsheltonarchitect.com\/store\/the-fig-district\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Fig District<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through practice and feedback during the class, I learned more about the importance of identifying light and incorporating shadow in creating a strong painting.
