Tubes, pencils, powders, pens, bottles \u2013 it\u2019s everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>Like most artists, I have my favorite \u2018go-to\u2019 colours. I&#8217;ll share a bit more about those in a future post. Yet, sometimes a painting calls for something a little bit out of the ordinary, or I\u2019m tempted by the promise of some intriguing new pigment.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a constant challenge for me to narrow down the number of colours in order to amp up the possibility of harmony in the art.<\/p>\n<p>These days, when I\u2019m working in the studio, I find myself doing a bit more colour planning before I start putting paint to paper.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll grab a scrap of watercolour paper, and create a sampler of intended colours and mixes \u2013 thinking about where and how I\u2019d like to use the different pigments and which ones I could do without or create from two colours already in the mix.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pauseworks.com\/patkatzartwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Colleen-VEnice-422w.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-670\" src=\"http:\/\/pauseworks.com\/patkatzartwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Colleen-VEnice-422w.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pauseworks.com\/patkatzartwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Colleen-VEnice-422w.jpg 400w, https:\/\/pauseworks.com\/patkatzartwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Colleen-VEnice-422w-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pauseworks.com\/patkatzartwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Colleen-VEnice-422w-200x122.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>The challenge is to see how I can create\u00a0the widest range of\u00a0options from the fewest colours.<\/p>\n<p>The sampler you see perched on the palette above is some of the pre-work I did to work out colour choices for the painting of a Venetian canal.<\/p>\n<p>The second image shows how those colors came together in the piece itself.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The one thing you\u2019re sure to find in any artist\u2019s studio is colour and more colour.
