Hues Workshop Show 2017

As an artist, I’m always learning. Sometimes it’s through trial and error in my sketchbook or studio. Other times I’m inspired by studying with other artists – via video or live classes.

Our local Hue’s Arts Supply is a great place to learn. Paul and the crew arrange for local artists to deliver a variety of evening workshops; and I’ve been fortunate enough to take two of them.

For the month of January 2017, Hues is generously mounting a show consisting of pieces created by students in these workshops.

I’ve contributed three pieces to the upcoming show: two abstract paintings I created in an Expressive WC Mark Making class taught by Anne McElroy, and one landscape painting I created in a WC class taught by Alison Montgomery.

You can see the show at Hues (1818 Lorne Avenue South in Saskatoon) during business hours from Monday to Saturday throughout the month of January.

Painting Portofino – A Work In Progress

Here’s a look at the creation of a painting from inspiration to ink to watercolor. This image was inspired by our October visit to the little fishing village of Portofino on the Italian Riviera.

I’ve wanted to visit Portofino for years, so it was a thrill to finally see it in person. I sketched in ink this view of a corner of Portofino Piazetta, which included the tower of Saint Martin’s Church, while sipping a cappuccino at a small cafe.

There was no time for paint on location, as we were there for just a couple of hours, and wanted to make sure that we had a chance to explore more of the village. Just around the corner from the piazetta we found a bakery and sampled one of the tasty delicacies originating in this part of Italy – focaccia fresh from the oven.

I added the color a couple of weeks later back in the studio in Saskatoon, photographing the progress as the painting unfolded.

Send A Greeting…Feed A Child

For the second year in a row, one of the images from Sketches of Saskatoon (this time, Meewasin Skating Rink) is being featured as part of the CHEP Christmas card collection.

CHEP is an organization that works with children, families and communities to improve access to good food. CHEP’s programs deliver healthy food to over 2,000 children every school day and more than 3,000 families every month.

The Christmas Card project raises funds for children’s nutrition programs, good food boxes, community gardens, collective kitchens, and infant nutrition programs. It’s a great cause coordinated by a great group of people.

Other artists featured in this year’s collection of cards include: Kevin Quinlin, Valerie Munch, Cecilia Elizabeth, Arnold Isbister, Dot Almas, and Hugo Alvarado.

Think about using these cards for your family or business greetings of the season. Send a greeting…feed a child!

Cards are available in both personalized (with your name and/or company logo) and non personalized formats. You can order them blank inside, with a choice of preprinted verses, or with your own customized greeting. You select the artist and image that suits you best.

Plein Air Show At HUES

HUES Plein Air Announcement-wStarting today, September 1st, you can view samples of the work of various Saskatoon artists who share an interest in painting in the great outdoors.

The show runs from September 1 through 30. An exhibition reception will take place at HUES (1818 Lorne Ave) on Saturday, September 10th between 2:00 and 4:00 pm.

Jean Dudley coordinates the weekend excursions that have taken the painters, who work in a variety of mediums, to various sites in and around the city.

HUES Art Supply serves as headquarters for the Saskatoon Plein Air Club.

Owner, Paul Trottier, graciously offered the gallery space at the shop for a show and sale of works created outdoors by the members of the club.

Eight artists will be sharing their works: Pat Doig, Jean Dudley, Jane A. Evans,  Irene Hughes, Cheryl MacDonald, Brett Schiissler, Diane Schiissler, and yours truly, Pat Katz.

Please consider this your personal invitation to drop by HUES and check out the show.

Sadly, I won’t be in attendance on the day of the reception, as that weekend I will be enjoying another plein adventure, creating sketches in St John’s, Newfoundland.

Do drop by and enjoy the show at the reception or some other time in September.

Garden Gallery In The Rear View

Painting Poppies wAs I look in the rear view mirror, it’s just a week ago that we welcomed guests to the tenth annual Mudslinger’s Garden Gallery in the Saskatoon gardens of Dale and Betty Gibbon and their next door neighbours, Janet and Ross.

 

For the most part, the weatherman cooperated with sunny skies. Only a brief sprinkle of rain mid afternoon had us rushing to get the paintings under cover.

 

Thanks to the Mudslingers for welcoming me as a Guest Artist and making my paintings part of your event.

 

Wall Piece - Roxanne wI posted a number of my paintings in the lead up to the Gallery. So many of you will have seen them.

 

I want to share here a few photos of some of the clay and glass works that were also on display. There were engaging wall works by Roxanne Enns with their elegant long shapes and intertwining swirling patterns.

 

Platter Paula wThere were platters and bowls and mugs by Paula Cooley, with their finely scribed patterns and strong colors.

 

Feather Vase - Lorraine-wThere were delicate vases by Lorraine Sutter with her signature feather and horsehair patterns tracing the surfaces of each piece.

 

Glasswork Betty wThere were brightly colored glass works by Betty Gibbon.

 

There were whimsical clay and glass pieces by Diane Koshgarian, and bold sculptures by fellow Guest Artist, Les Potter. (Sorry no pictures of those to share).

 

Urn Wilkinson wThere was a beautifully shaped urn by Ken Wilkinson featuring intricate lace work to hold the top in place.

 

We really appreciate the friends, fellow artists, family members, and patrons who took the time to add a Garden Gallery visit to their day.

 

Painting Tanaya wA highlight of the day for me was spending a half hour painting and chatting with young Tanaya while her Mom browsed the wares on offer.

There’s no hesitation in the brushes of young artists. They pick up the paint and let it fly. We could all learn something from those courageous beginners’ minds.

Just Ten More Sleeps!

Mudlingers Gallery Combo

I’m excited. There are just ten more sleeps until the 2016 edition of the Mudslingers Garden Gallery. And YOU and your friends are invited!

This year’s event will be held on Thursday, August 18th from Noon to 7 pm in the beautiful gardens at 2422 Clarence Avenue S here in Saskatoon.

The Backstory: Ten years ago, we opened our garden on O’Brien to host a fine group of artisans known as the Mudslingers in presenting their very first Garden Gallery. The idea was to display fine art and crafts – mostly pottery – in a natural setting, with the greens of the garden providing the backdrop.

The show and sale was a great success, and the group has continued this annual tradition of staging an outdoor show. I’ve taken part as a guest artist in the past and will be doing so again this year.

The Artisans & Artists: You’ll find pottery and glass works by Betty Gibbon, Paula Cooley, Ken Wilkinson, Dian Koshgarian, Lorraine Sutter and Roxanne Enns, as well as a selection of my watercolor paintings. Fellow guest artist, Les Potter, will also be presenting his abstract sculptures.
