Next Monday, November 26/18, our group will be hosting an Open Studio in the auditorium of Grace Westminster Church at 505 – 10thStreet East here in Saskatoon. This is where we hold our weekly sessions. and we’re throwing the doors open that day from 11 am to 9 pm.
Since September, I’ve been spending Mondays painting with these lively members of the Artists’ Workshop group. They’re each fine artists in their own right – and exceedingly generous with their time and their expertise.
I’ve enjoyed experimenting with different techniques in ink and watercolor, and feel myself growing as an artist as I watch and learn from what others are doing.
And now, it’s time to share with all of you the kinds of things we’ve been working on and playing with.
You will discover displays of work from each of us. You’ll also find members of our group available for informal show and tell conversations so that you can learn more about how we work with our ideas and materials to create the images you’ll find in the show.
I hope you’ll be able to drop on by sometime during the day or evening to share in our world of art – and perhaps pick up some fine art to spice up your world or gift to someone else.
One of our artists, Paige Mortenson, has created a compilation of images which features one piece of art from each of our members. (See below)
In this week’s count down to the Open Studio event, each day I’ll be posting here in my Pauseworks Studio blog a couple of sample images from my collection – items that you can expect to see in the show. I hope they entice you to drop on by.

One of the first things I learned after I signed on as a member of the Artists’ Workshop at the beginning of September is that plans were already afoot for a group show for the month of October to be displayed in the gallery space at Hues Art Supply.
Fortunately, I had a couple of pieces ready to go that I could contribute to the show. So you will find my work in the mix.
The show runs through the entire month of October. The gallery is located at 1818 Lorne Ave here in Saskatoon.
The exhibit reception is scheduled for the afternoon of Saturday, October 13th between the hours of 2pm and 4pm.
I already had plans to be away that weekend, so I won’t be able to attend the reception. However, you will find most of the other members of the group on hand. I know they will be delighted to make you feel welcome, chat about art, and share the behind the scenes stories about the pieces on display.
I hope you are able to drop by sometime this month to check out the show.

Back in February of 2016, I celebrated the 30thanniversary of my business by inviting supporters to enter a draw for: a bundle of publications, a donation to a charity of their choice, and an original ink and watercolor sketch inspired by a photo of a place that mattered to them.
The first two prizes were dispatched right away. However, it took the winner of the original sketch, Kristi Glover of Saskatoon, a couple of years to claim her prize.
Life has a way of tossing roadblocks in our path from time to time, but now Kristi has her prize in hand. I was delighted to be able to create for her an original sketch of her family cottage at Waskesiu Lake in Prince Albert National Park. Read more….

The temperature was hot (35C), and the enthusiasm was high for the Ink & Watercolor Workshops that I delivered through Black Spruce Gallery in early August.
I’m not a novice in the world of leading workshops. I’ve been doing that my entire career. However, I am new to delivering workshops in the world of art. And, in a word, I had a blast!
When participants are eager to learn, it adds so much to the workshop experience. And that was definitely the case with the two groups of enthusiastic artists who took part in these programs.

I’m stepping out and delivering my first ‘open to the public’ art workshop this summer at Black Spruce Gallery in Northside Antiques on Highway #2, just south of Christopher and Emma Lake.
The one day workshop will run from 9 am to 3:30 pm on Friday, August 10th.
If you want to learn more about painting lively, light-hearted, colorful ink and watercolor sketches, this workshop is for you. I will be sharing a sampling of the techniques I use to create my whimsical, colorful vignettes of the world.
You’ll be treated to a series of ‘See & Try’ experiences – brief demos followed by hands on experiments. There will be no pressure to create a grand masterpiece – just an invitation to explore and enjoy.
You will learn more about:
- Using continuous line contour drawings to loosen up and warm up
- Cultivating the art of noticing as a way to breathe more life into your images
- Creating dynamic lines and taking a creep ‘n’ crawl approach to composition
- Playing with an Elegant Writer to produce fun and easy images
- Mixing and applying watercolors in ways that keep them fresh and lively (using place ‘n’ pull and toss ‘n’ tease techniques)
- Combining watercolor splashes with ink lines – for contrast and emphasis
Morning instruction will be held in the classroom and (weather permitting) the afternoon session will take place en plein air (in the great outdoors).
Instructional Level: Some prior experience with watercolors will be an asset, but is not essential. Instruction will be geared to Beginner/Intermediate levels.
The workshop fee will be $125 for the day with lunch included. This link will take you to complete details on my session (and other workshops being offered this summer at Black Spruce Gallery), as well as a materials list and an online form for registering for the workshop.
I hope to see you there!

Canada 150 Art Project – Newfoundland Labrador

Welcome to the third in a series of ten watercolor paintings to honor Canada’s Sesquicentennial – this one featuring Newfoundland Labrador. Read on for more about the backstory behind this painting, and to learn how you can make this painting yours.
The Backstory: You’ll find this fishing stage along the edge of Quidi Vidi Harbour in St John’s, Newfoundland. It’s where I recently spent a delightful afternoon sketching while soaking up the September sun. On that same visit to this capital of Newfoundland Labrador, I also explored The Rooms, a recently opened museum and art gallery high on the hill overlooking the Narrows.
My earliest and most memorable experience on ‘The Rock’ was a 1981 Lobster Fest in Pippy Park just west of St John’s proper. Our ‘Come From Away’ group members were seated on stools around upended barrels covered in newspaper and populated with hammers, picks, and tubs of melted butter. Throughout the evening, fresh cooked lobsters were deposited repeatedly on our makeshift tables while our Newfie hosts moved through our crowd of newbies giving lessons on how to attack and devour. It was a riot of fun and a tasty introduction to Atlantic food and Newfoundland hospitality.
I’ve also enjoyed the music in the pubs on George Street and been screeched in – twice! Apparently the first time didn’t take – or at least the ceremonial officials didn’t believe I had actually kissed the cod!
Over the years, I’ve returned several times to the Avalon Peninsula and enjoyed exploring these sights:
- St John’s Signal Hill, the Battery, the Narrows, and the colorful rows of Jelly Bean Houses
- Cape Spear (Newfoundland’s most easterly and oldest surviving lighthouse)
- Scenic Petty Harbour
- Brigus South (towards Cape Broyle), an ancient fishing village settled in the 1600’s with a most colorful array of dories lining the banks of the inlet
Our son-in-law, Marc, was born and raised in Pasadena, a small town near Cornerbrook along the beautiful Humber Valley in the western part of Newfoundland. I have yet to visit his home territory, but hope to do so sometime soon.
How You Can Make This Painting Yours: In honor of our country’s 2017 anniversary celebrations, I’ve created one watercolor painting to honor each province.
One unique provincial landscape, seascape or streetscape will be featured each week throughout the summer. Ten paintings are up for grabs – one for each province – and one each week.
Each original painting is 8” x 10” in size and each one will arrive mounted in a double white mat bringing the outer dimensions to 11” x 14” – ready to pop into a standard frame of your own choosing.
The price for each painting will be $150 (taxes included) plus $15 for shipping to anywhere in Canada.
If you are looking for a unique remembrance of Canada 150, and you’ve always wanted to buy an original watercolor from the Pauseworks Studio, here’s your chance.
Just send me an email message with the words ‘Canada 150 – I’ll Take It’ in the subject line. The first reader to call dibs on each week’s masterpiece takes it. Good luck to all!

Celebrating Canada’s Sesquicentennial In An Artful Way
- At June 27, 2017

I was 15 years old during Canada’s centennial year back in 1967. That year, every community across the country celebrated in some way large or small – a new rink, a small park, a refurbished hall, a history book. Many organizations and individuals also created their own centennial projects to mark the occasion.
Fifty years later, I still appreciate this country of Canada that we call home – perhaps even more now than I did then. It’s that gratitude and pride of place that prompted me to create my own Sesquicentennial Project. I can’t spell it…but that’s not stopping me from diving in anyway!
To mark this special occasion, I’ve created ten paintings – one for each of the provinces in Canada. Over the years, I’ve visited all ten provinces. They each have their own unique charms; and I would be content to call any one of them home.
Between now and Labor Day, I’ll be presenting each of the ten paintings – one a week – along with a few notes about my memories of visits to each province.
You’ll see them featured in this Pauseworks Studio blog, in my regular Pause blog, and in the weekly Pause ezine.
All of these landscapes, seascapes or streetscapes will be looking for new homes. Each painting will be up for grabs at a special sesquicentennial price of $150 (taxes included) plus $15 for shipping to anywhere in Canada.
Each painting is 8” x 10” in size and each one will arrive mounted in a double white mat bringing the outer dimensions to 11” x 14” – ready to pop into a standard frame of your own choosing.
If you are looking for a unique remembrance of Canada 150 for yourself or someone else, or you’ve always wanted an original watercolor from the Pauseworks Studio, here’s your chance.
As each painting is released, just send me an email message (to pat@patkatzart.com) with the words ‘Canada 150 – I’ll Take It’ in the subject line. The first reader to call dibs on each week’s masterpiece takes it.
First up – starting tomorrow – will be Prince Edward Island.

Colour For A Cause

I just finished adding some watercolor to a patch of crocuses, and I did it for a cause! It’s part of a project to benefit Creative Kids Saskatchewan titled Colour For A Cause.
Jason Sylvestre (illustrator of the very popular You Might Be From Saskatchewan If book) has published a 70 page colouring book of scenes from Saskatchewan.
Jason and his publisher, MacIntyre Purcell, are partnering to use the coloring books to raise money for Creative Kids Saskatchewan. Creative Kids is a charitable giving program that helps enable low-income children and youth to participate in arts and culture activities.
Saskatchewan artists, athletes, media and business personalities have been provided with advance copies of the books and been asked to sign and color one page in their books.
All of these books will be offered for purchase in a televised auction in June with 100% of the proceeds going to Creative Kids Saskatchewan. In addition, 10% of all general sales will also go to Creative Kids.
For more information on the fundraiser, contact Christie McCullock at Creative Kids Saskatchewan.
To connect with Jason, see his Facebook page.
To learn more about the Colour Saskatchewan book, see this page at MacIntyre Purcell Publishing.
I understand the books are already stocked on the shelves of many Saskatchewan bookstores.
