It seems like I just posted a message like this recently, but here we go again.
I will be delivering another offering of Sketching With Ink & Watercolor this fall through the Community Arts program at the University of Saskatchewan.
This link will take you to the page with complete program details and online registration.
Registration just opened this morning, and spots are going quickly. When I checked a few minutes ago, there were still 3 open spots for students.
The class will presented in five (3-hour) sessions (once a week on Wednesday evenings) spread out over a month from November 9 through December 7
The series is designed for artists and would be artists who are attracted to expressive line work and lively colors and keen to create images inspired by everyday life experiences.
We will work with ink and watercolor on paper, and engage in a series of ‘see & try’ experiences – brief demos followed by hands-on exercises and assignments.
The aim: to build a set of skills to help people capture vignettes on paper wherever they find them – from their own backyards to street cafés halfway around the world.
These are some of the topics we will cover:

We’re less than a week away from the opening of our Artists’ Workshop 2022 Spring Show & Sale.
It’s been a fun adventure sorting through my work from the last three years and deciding what I will be presenting in the show.
Amazingly, I’m feeling pretty much ready for the big event.
Maybe that’s a result of having had the last three years to be preparing for it.
If I had to choose one word to describe the work I’ll be presenting it would be ‘varied.
All of the work is watercolor – nothing has changed there.
Some is watercolor with pen and some without.

Sketching on the go, whether it’s while vacationing in a foreign country or while sipping coffee in your local neighborhood cafe, is an exciting way to experience the world.
I’ve had a number of requests to share some info about what I take with me on these excursions. The answer varies depending on where I am, how long I’m planning to be out, and what I’m hoping to capture. But, that said, here’s the scoop on the basics and the extras.

I just wrapped up the third virtual offering of my Sketching With Ink & Watercolor Class presented through the Community Arts program at the University of Saskatchewan.
Five sessions (once a week) spread out over a month from start to finish. The series is designed for artists and would be artists who are attracted to expressive line work and lively colors and keen to create images inspired by everyday life experiences.
We worked with ink and watercolor on paper, and engaged in a series of ‘see & try’ experiences – brief demos followed by hands-on exercises and assignments.
The aim: to build a set of skills to help people capture vignettes on paper wherever they find them – from their own backyards to street cafés halfway around the world.
These are some of the topics we covered:
- Cultivating the art of noticing as a way to breathe more life into images
- Experimenting with dynamic lines to add variety and emphasis to the work
- Mixing and applying watercolors in ways that keep them fresh and lively
- Approaching a scene, exploring compositions, choosing a focus & completing a sketch
- Putting it all together – including specific tools and tips for sketching on the go
- Developing skills in critiquing your own sketches to keep growing as an artist
I enjoyed connecting with another lively group of committed students. They were quick to share their questions, eager to try to the techniques, and steady on the follow through with their practice assignments.
This time I delivered an evening class (5:30-8:30). So special thanks to husband, Dave, who created a 5:00 snack to nosh on before class, and was ready with dinner to enjoy after it was over.
More than once, during the delivery of the sessions, I found myself smiling to myself and thinking, “This is fun!” What more could you ask for?
Ending The Year With Gratitude

As 2021 rolls to a close, it’s oh so clear that the challenges of the Covid 19 Pandemic continue to bring major disruptions to work, family and life as we knew it.
In the midst of the madness, I want to mark this moment by expressing my gratitude to all who have been following and supporting my adventures in art. In a world gone sideways, your words of encouragement have meant so much to me.
I hope that the art I have created and shared in recent months has helped you find distraction, diversion, connection, and perhaps even a wee bit of joy!
As I look back from this vantage point, I see how engaging in art played a key role in my own health and wellbeing through this time.
Although I could no longer travel the world at will to sketch on street corners in exotic locations, I could always head to my studio and play with my brushes and my paints.
Although our Artists’ Workshop Spring Show was cancelled, I was still able to share my work online and in two live solo exhibitions. We weren’t able to hold live receptions for those events, but that encouraged me to find other ways to connect people with the work.
While I couldn’t take part in live workshops with other artists to improve my skills, many artists embraced online opportunities and shared their instruction through the virtual world. I took advantage of many of those offerings.
I also ended up delivering virtual Sketching With Ink & Watercolor classes myself – and grew my own presentation skills in the process.
It’s impossible to predict how 2022 will unfold. But I do know that I intend to keep on making make art whenever and wherever I can. I have a few new ideas brewing, and I look forward to sharing them with you all in the months ahead.
Wishing you the very best of the season and continued good health, Pat
