So far this spring, warm, calm, sunny days have been hard to come by here in Saskatchewan. But today delivered, so I spent a good chunk of the afternoon sketching flowers in the Pausegarden.
To celebrate the impending arrival of summer on June the 20th, I’m offering up the six sketches I created to give you an opportunity to welcome summer to your world, too. One painting will be released each day until the first day of summer.
The original watercolor sketches are 2.5 x 3.5” in size, slipped inside a cello pouch, and mounted in a stand-up paper frame card that takes the outer dimensions to 3.5” x 5”. They are available at a sunny summer special price of $40 each (taxes and postage included). Payment by e-transfer.
Starting tomorrow, June 15th, I’ll be posting one ‘pic of the day’ on Social media (Facebook & Instagram) around 9 am.
Each painting will go to the first person to claim it by sending an email request for the ‘pic of the day’ to pat@patkatzart.com.
Good luck and happy summer to you.

This year, HUES Art Supply in Saskatoon is marking its tenth anniversary of providing art materials and quality instruction for local artists.
To celebrate a decade of fostering creativity in the community, they are sponsoring a ten month series of workshops resourced by Saskatchewan artists who have contributed to the local artistic landscape.
I’m delighted to be included in this list of illustrious instructors – along with (so far) – Carole Wylie, Cam Forrester, Paul Trottier, Cheryl Tuck Tallon, Jackie Miller & Monique Blom.
On Saturday, March 23rd, 2024, I’ll be delivering a one-day five-hour workshop at Hues focusing on Travel Sketching With Ink & Watercolor.
This link will take you to the information and registration page that details how to join in the fun. Feel free to share the link with others who might also be interested.
Be sure to watch for announcements of more of the 10th Anniversary Workshop Sessions as they are scheduled in the weeks ahead.
Let It Snow…Let It Snow…Let It Snow!

Well, it’s 12 days till Christmas and here in Saskatoon (and apparently in a few other places across the country), there is no snow to be found.
If you are yearning for a White Christmas, this offer might help you make that dream come true.
Here are four snowy winter scenes from the Blue Sky Series that I introduced in December of 2023. All the other siblings in the series found homes at that time.
Since the debut of the series, which was offered unframed, I have matted and mounted this quartette of beauties under glass in silver aluminum frames with hanging wires – completely ready to display on your wall.
The price for each 8” x 8” original watercolor with gouache – professionally mounted and framed – is $100 including taxes. Delivery in Saskatoon is provided free of charge. Shipping outside the city will be billed at cost.
If you are interested in adding these fresh snow scenes to your world – or gifting them to someone else – just send me a message and we will make that happen.
Let it snow…let it snow…let it snow!
BTW – it’s a challenge to photograph paintings under glass on an angle that avoids reflections. Do rest assured that all the frames are square as can be even though they may not look so in the images here.
Individual images are posted below along with their titles, so you know which one(s) to ask for.

How Do You Do That?

How do you do that? It’s a question that artists hear a lot when others look at their work. It seems there’s a bit of mystery around the art of putting brush to paper or canvas – especially if it’s not part of your own experience. Sometimes a bit of show and tell is the best way to shed some light on the answer to that question.
To that end, I’m sharing a time lapse video of a recent sketch – Autumn On The Doorstep– that I created in the studio. The piece took about 45 minutes to draw and paint. But through the magic of time lapse editing, I’ve shortened it down to just 5 minutes.
A voice-over narration describes a few of the tools and supplies as well as some of the choices made as the work evolved.
I hope you enjoy tagging along for the ride.

A late August trip to pick summer annuals at Black Fox Flower Farms was the inspiration for my latest painting.
This sunny bouquet featured sunflowers, rudbeckia, zinnias and queen anne’s lace.
As you can see from the photo here, those yellows looked so fresh and bright against the background greens.
Let me show you how the painting process went.

Unique to our Artists’ Workshop 2023 show will be a set of works expressing our individual interpretations of the color palette featured in our Viewpoints show logo (pictured below).
My contribution takes the form of nine 8×8” color blocks on canvas each accented with a strip of copper foil. Three of them are pictured here.
They’re perfect to mix and match for wall display or as accents on shelves or side tables.
On view and on offer at our upcoming Artists’ Workshop Show and Sale happening at Grace Westminster Church (505 10th St E in Saskatoon) on Friday, April 21 (5-8), Saturday, April 22 (10-4) and Sunday, April 23 (12-4).
